The Wasps and Panthers will make Hull basketball history in the second ever hull basketball derby.
It's going to be a big day for basketball fans in Hull this Saturday as the long-awaited second derby takes place between the Hull Wasps and Kingston Panthers.
The game will take place at 3pm on the Kingston Panthers' home court at the Sports Arena (formerly the home court of the Hull Wasps before they moved to the Ennerdale Leisure Centre). The game promises to be an entertaining yet tense affair as both teams are currently fighting hard for promotion at the end of the season. The competition will be fierce as each team shall be putting their best foot forward with the aim to establish themselves as "Hull's premier basketball team."
Having won the first derby back in October at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre with a score of 94-70, the Hull Wasps will be going into Saturday's game determined to get another victory over their rivals, whereas the Panthers will be working harder than ever to attempt to even the score.
This season is the first time that Hull has had two National League teams and is the Kingston Panthers' debut season in Division 4. The Panthers currently stand at second place in league table and have enjoyed a successful inaugral run with a win record of 8-2. The Hull Wasps have suffered a couple of disappointments this season but also stand strong at 4th place. They will be going into the game determined to prove themselves against their rivals once more. Coach Fawcett has recently signed a number of new players and has welcomed back ex-Wasps player Neil Rymer. The squad therefore is the strongest it has been all season and this will help massively at the game.
"I don't think I need to stress how important this game is to me and the team," Coach Matt Fawcett of the Hull Wasps commented. "This is another must-win game and we've been waiting a while to get another chance to face the Panthers. It's going to be extremely competitive and we need as many supporters as we can to make the game as atmospheric and exciting as the last one. We have been working very hard for this and are well prepared for the game."
The previous derby was a huge success for local basketball and witnessed a massive turnout of fans, with seating completely sold out and some fans having to stand in the balconies to watch the game. With Wasps supporters keen to see their team achieve another win against their rivals and Panthers fans desperate for another chance against the Wasps, this derby should prove to be just as entertaining as the last.
Tip off is 3pm at the Sports Arena (Bonus Arena) in Hull on Saturday 25th January.
