Hull Wasps 77 Huddersfield Heat 72

The new-look Hull Wasps were in celebratory mood after claiming the 2011 Yorkshire Shield by defeating Division 3 Huddersfield Heat, 77-72.

In a tight pre-season contest between the two-Yorkshire sides, no-one ever looked to be in total control throughout the game. After a stuttering opening exchange the Wasps suddenly found themselves behind at 10-6 but with the crowd behind them, the Wasps produced a fight back to take the lead into the break at 20-13.

Another close period saw last season’s Division 4 North Champions, Huddersfield Heat, gradually work their way back into the game and closed the gap to just 2 points to go in 31-29 behind at the half-time break.

The third period saw much of the same from both sides who still both seemed to be finding their feet after a long summer break. Small rallies from each side came but the Hear finished stronger and took the lead going into the final period at 50-48.

The final quarter produced much of the same but with just 3 minutes left to go and the balance of the game starting to swing toward the Heat, player-coach Matt Fawcett sprung a clutch three-pointer and the Wasps went on a 11-6 run to win the game.

Wasps had to work hard from the line in the final minute with stand-in captain Andrew Marr and new boy Matt Brutnell both going to the line for free-throws to seal the win.

Both sides had a number of injuries. Huddersfield’s most noticeable absence was Jason Swaine. John Brignell, Miles Anderson and James Rayner were all missing for the Wasps through injury and other commitments.

Andrew Marr, Matt Fawcett and Matt Brutnell joint top-scored for the Wasps with 14 points each. Adrian Blatherwick contributed 12 including a couple of trademark three’s.
