The Wasps learned a hard lesson in their pre-season tournament this weekend when they were beaten by the more experienced teams in this years North East Challenge Cup pre-season tournament.

In the absense of coach, James Coulson, the Wasps pressed hard against some tough opposition. Losing in the first 2 games to League 1 and 2 sides, the Wasps then pushed League 4 opponents, Tyne Met Trojans, all the way only to miss out in the final quarter.

The Third and Fouth place play-off between the same sides again on the Sunday, proved an even tighter afair, with club captain, Matt Fawcett, hitting a last second 3 point buzzer beater to send the play-off into overtime. The Wasps, then had key men fouled out in overtime, losing in the end to several free throw shots.

Club captain, Matt Fawcett felt the team did themselves proud: "I really feel like we have a lot to be proud of. We lost yesterday in a close game to the Trojans, and we felt with more energy and intensity we could take the play-off. It wasn't to be however but it was a great feeling to the beat the buzzer and send the game into over time.

We have a taste of the standard of this league now. We know we need to work even harder to compete but we're proud of our performance against one of the highest standing teams in this league."
