Hull Wasps began their pre-season campaign with an impressive 67-65 win at Middlesbrough Lions on Sunday afternoon.
After a slow start for both teams, Wasps forward Matt Brutnell got the scoring going, netting the first 5 points for the visitors. But it wasn't a lead that the Wasps would hold onto as the Middlesbrough Lions hit back and took a 14-11 into the first break.
Both teams were scoring better in the second period. The Wasps were able to hit the home side on the break but still unable to close the gap, down 38-33 at half-time.
Guards Adrian Blatherwick and Neil Rymer found their range in the second half, hitting several three's from the outside. Matt Brutnell and new-signing Matt Wilson found their scoring touch on the inside also to bring the Wasps level.
In the final moments, Matt Wilson scored a reverse lay-up to put the Wasps up by 2 at 65-63 followed by Middlesbrough's Papis, who hit both of his free-throws to level the game.
With just seconds to go, Matt Wilson used his strength to get to the basket to net what ultimately became the game winner. The Lions had one final 3 point attempt at the buzzer which rattled out and hand victory to the visiting Wasps.
It was a win which delighted Head Coach, Matt Fawcett who said it was something to take forward into the start of the new season.
"We played very well today and the new players settled in very well."
"Middlesbrough is a tough place to come. They're on a high right now with their promotion to Division 3 and they did the league double over us last season so we knew coming to play them would be hard.
"That's why we wanted it though. We knew a test like this was exactly what we needed in preparation for the season ahead."
Fawcett took a 12-man squad with him to Teeside which included 5 new players. Adrian Blatherwick top scored for the Wasps with 16 points, Brutnell scored 15, while Rymer and Wilson scored 9 each.
