The Wasps have signed Great Britain under 20s star John Stewart for the upcoming season. Stewart, who played for Loughborough University last season and the BBL’s Leicester Riders, has joined the club after recently moving to the local area.
Stewart was also a major part of the recent success of the GB team that came second in the under 20s European Championships during the summer. At 6"5 Stewart will be another great addition to the club and after joining up with the squad last night in training coach Fawcett was quick to highlight how impressed he was with John.
“You could tell the quality of player he was from the minute he stepped on the court. Good players are able to play their own way and shine, great players shine whilst making the players around him better. Last night everybody stepped up and it made training a lot more intense. John can shoot the ball, dribble, and pass. He is tough and understands what it takes to win. Most of all what impresses me is how humble he is. He wants to get better and he wants team success.”
John has already done some amazing things in his basketball career. He has not only represented Great Britain for numerous years but he has played in the highest domestic league in the UK (The BBL). He has represented England and the English University select team. Last year he also won the BUCS Trophy alongside recent addition Jack Daley.
Chairman Dave Bushnell, also in attendance at training last night, commented on John’s fantastic achievements. “What John has been able to achieve is fantastic. What stands out about him as a person is that he is never satisfied. I know he has expressed to Coach Fawcett about his desire to win the league this year and hopefully this can become a reality.”
With John now linked with the squad, he is expected to feature in Coach Fawcett’s team this weekend as they tip off their pre-season against the Stockport Falcons in Stockport on Saturday.
