Hull Wasps return to action this Saturday at Ennerdale Leisure Centre when they entertain Bradford Dragons II in V-Cars.co.uk division 4, hoping to continue their recent run of good form. Four wins on the trot had seen the Wasps climb to third in the league before defeats at the hands of league-leading Tees Valley Mohawks and at home in the shield versus division 3 leaders Ipswich Tomcats stopped the momentum. Both of these losses, however, were against very good teams, and in both matches Wasps matched their opponents for long periods and were far from outclassed.
Should any further incentive be needed to improve on their 4-4 record and current position of 5th place, Wasps need only to cast their minds back to the opening game of the season when they dominated the encounter until a horrible 4th quarter saw them surrender an 11 point lead in a 59-56 defeat.
In Rob Donaldson, the Dragons possess one of the most talented and dangerous scorers in the division. He led Bradford in the opening match with 22 points against the Wasps and has continued his high scoring exploits, averaging 27.6 points per game so far this season. Dave Lawal ably supports him, the big man is averaging 12 points per game this season but also is a big presence in the paint.
Since that opening match, the Dragons are on a 4-game losing streak and currently occupy 7th position in V-Cars.co.uk division 4 with a 2-4 record.
For the Wasps at the half way stage of the season, Matt Brutnell has been outstanding, averaging a career best 18 ppg. Neil Rymer has demonstrated why he has been missed in recent seasons by contributing 13 ppg and after a slow start James Rayner is averaging 11.7 ppg.
Coach Fawcett has high hopes for this year, commenting that "With a new year brings new goals for this half of the season, first and foremost of which is to get better as a group. We have to play at a high level and a consistent level. This will not be easy but the lads will be ready to work when we get back together Saturday on the court."
Tip off 6.30pm Saturday 12th January 2013.
