Hull Wasps 83 Liverpool 57
Hull Wasps put in a controlled performance against visiting Liverpool at Ennerdale Leisure Centre on Saturday evening. After a delayed start which saw the game begin over an hour late, the Wasps dominated the opening period with some excellent defensive work and quick passing to open up a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Wasps seemed to ease off the gas a little in the second period but maintained the gap with a pair of three's from shooting guard Adrian Blatherwick. Both sides scored 16 points each in the period to go in at the half time interval, 39-24 to the home side.
Both sides came out battling at the beginning of the third-period but it wasn't long before play was stopped after Liverpool's Alan Burgess was badly injured, breaking his ankle after a jump for the ball. After the paramedics took Burgess to hospital, play resumed and the Wasps opened up their lead to enter the final quarter 23 points ahead at 63-40.
The home side came out battling and put together an 8-2 run to extend the lead further again. Liverpool pulled some points back from the free-throw line but the damage was already done and Wasps closed out the game at 83-57.
John Brignell top scored again for the Wasps with 19 points and was awarded Most Valuable Player. Adrian Blatherwick and Miles Anderson came second with 10 points each.
The club would like to thank all the fans who attended this evening. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delay and thank you for your patience. Wasps travel to Mold Magic on Sunday at 2:00pm.
