Hull Wasps travel to Merseyside tomorrow to open their Division 3 basketball season against Liverpool.
Liverpool, who have a squad containing six ex-BBL players (the top league in the UK), won the Division 4 North and Play-Off title last season and are already tipped as one of the favourites for this year’s Division 3 title.
Wasps Head Coach, Matt Fawcett, has recruited well over the summer and worked hard to bring back influential guard, Ash Rice along with young French starlet Florent Gammino. Brothers Jordache and Jazz Akpoveta have also returned along with forward Sean Knight. Captain John Kelsey returns for his seventh season while American forward Matt MacArt has also re-joined the squad. All will be key to the success of the Wasps this year.
Coach Fawcett is now entering his fourth season as Wasps Head-Coach and brought promotion to Division 3 by finishing runners-up in Division 3 last season. He won’t be available this weekend to coach the squad against Liverpool but assistant-coach James Coulson will be stepping in to take the reins.
“Without question it’ll be a tough challenge tomorrow” said Coulson who’s was the Wasps head-coach in their opening season six years ago.
“The players are up for it though both physically and mentally. We know Liverpool are strong with some top players in their team, but we came close in the two meet-ups last season and we’re confident of producing another good performance against them this year.”
Tip-off tomorrow is 4:30pm at Archbishop Beck Sports College in Liverpool.
