Hull Wasps made it two wins from their two home games this weekend after a dramatic 63-62 win over Division 3 Sefton Stars.
On the back of Saturday’s comfortable win, Ben Burns and James Coulson came in to replace Matt Fawcett and Chris Mills against Sefton Stars.
Sefton were looking to bounce back from the previous night’s defeat at home, but it was the Wasps who roared ahead from the tip off. Matt Brutnell opened with the first 5 points, followed by back-to-back three pointers from Neil Rymer. The Wasps led 11-2. Four more points from the impressive Brutnell, giving him 9 for the quarter, saw Wasps lead 24-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams traded baskets at the start of the second quarter before Chiz Onoura inspired Sefton to a 10-6 run, with 8 points of his own, to close the gap to 36-27 at half time.
Wasps captain John Kelsey began the third quarter in typically intense style with 2 quick steals before picking out the cutting Matt Brutnell, who was fouled in the process of scoring, with the pass of the match. Brutnell converted the charity shot to extend the Wasps’ lead to 15 at 49-34. Sefton began to rally at this point, behind 15 combined points for Flanagan and the outstanding Onuora, and the third quarter finished 53-43.
Perhaps thinking back to last week’s 4th quarter collapse, the Wasps appeared nervous and despite 4 early points from Rymer, Sefton slowly chipped away at the lead. With Wasps now severely under pressure, Ben Burns pulled down a defensive rebound before going coast to coast for a massive 2 points. Despite a late three from Sefton, Wasps held out as their opponents missed 2 shots on the buzzer.
Final score 63-62.
Matt Brutnell led the way for the Wasps with 26 points and 10 rebounds to go with 3 steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists to cap an MVP performance whilst Chiz Onuora led Sefton Stars with 21 points. Neil Rymer also shone, finishing with 16 points along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Scorers; Brutnell 26, Rymer 16, Coulson 7, Burns 5, Blatherwick 3, Wilson 2, Baker 2, Kelsey 2.
The next match for Hull Wasps is away to Mold Magic, on Sunday 28th October 2012. The Wasps have also set up a Round 3 Shield fixture with Tees Valley Mohawks II at home on Sunday 11 November (Tip off TBC).
