One of the city’s biggest basketball tournaments is set to launch this Sunday. Up to 32 teams from primary schools, secondary schools and adults will gather together for a one-day tournament making it one of the biggest one-day basketball events to ever hit the city.
Hosted by the Hull Wasps, teams from all over the Humber region are invited to come and take part in Sunday’s participation event.
Dave Bushnell, the club’s chairman said: "We’re looking to increase the profile of basketball and increase participation of our sport within the region. By using the 3 player format of the game, it allows players to quickly organise their teams, play and enjoy the day.
“This is set to be the biggest one-day basketball tournament to hit our region in years and we hope the whole basketball community within the Humber region will turn out and support such a marvellous event."
Titled as “3on3 LIVE”, the tournament tips-off from 9am this Sunday starting with the junior tournaments, which include under-12’s and under’16’s. The senior tournament for over-16’s will begin at 12pm and will finish around 3pm.
Teams pay just £20 to enter their team and all proceeds go towards the development of the club and basketball within the region.
Bushnell also confirmed that the tournament is also to help with the club’s current financial struggles.
He continued: “The event is a great way to help us fundraise. In the local economy, sponsors are hard to come by. Businesses are feeling the pinch more than ever and consequently, sports like basketball struggle to obtain the sponsorship needed to help fund it.
“The event is a fun way to help us generate funds for the club. Everyone can get involved and we’ll be hosting a few more fundraising events in the coming weeks. “
