The Hull Wasps started their preseason on Saturday against a tough well drilled Stockport Falcons team. Last season the Wasps faced off against the Falcons winning both games but for the first time in the clubs history the two clubs won’t face off during the regular season because Stockport are now playing in the Midlands division.
The game started scrappy from both teams as both squads tried to establish their style of play. The Wasps fell behind early and actually remained scoreless for the first 4 minutes. A timeout was called by coach Fawcett and the players soon settled down. The Falcons continued to play tough but enthused from the timeout the Wasps came fighting back and took the lead.
The Wasps would continue to play hard throughout the first half however the lack of cohesion between the new and existing players was beginning to tell and some silly mistakes were made.
The second half started as the first half ended, both teams trading baskets. New signing John Stewart and Jack Daley used their athletic ability to attack the basket and draw fouls. Robin Hewson was also in good shooting form and would help the Wasps hold off the Falcons advances.
The 4th quarter played out much the same way with exception to a 3 minute run by the Wasps that would blow the games open and hold off the home team until the final buzzer.
The Wasps walked away with their first preseason win 58-50.
Coach Fawcett commented after the game. “The first game was always going to be scrappy we have been facing off against each other in training for so long now that the excitement was too much when we could finally play another team. There was some positive to take away and some things to tweak. We will be busy this week before we go face Tees Valley on Saturday.”
The Wasps go north on Saturday to face Tees Valley Mohawks and one more to be named in a three team tournament.
