The Hull Wasps’ new season got off to a flying start on Saturday night with a spectacular victory over Childwall Academy at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre.
A dynamic start saw the Wasps take a 10-point lead within the first 4 minutes, with last week’s MVP John Stewart kicking off proceedings. James Rayner and new signing Matt Macart both contributed quick baskets of their own, giving the Wasps an immediate advantage. Both teams played fast and effectively, with the Wasps team showing an improved cohesion and fluidity from the last game and dominating most of the quarter, despite strong attempts from Sharif of Childwall to even the score. 39-19.
In the second quarter, Wasps big man Manuel Guzman, standing tall at a massive 6’8, made an impressive debut, with Hope, Macart, Hewson and Stewart backing him up. The opposition struggled heavily to defend against the Wasps, and with Lee Brown showcasing his skills with a number of two-pointers, the quarter ended with Wasps having doubled their score to 62 with Childwall having made a small improvement. 62-26.
The third quarter witnessed Childwall’s renewed energy as they attempted to close the gap, but with brilliant performances and consistent 2-pointers by John Stewart, Lee Brown and Macart, the Wasps brought their lead up to a huge 83-39. Sharif, Simpson and Schooler of Childwall Academy continued to score throughout the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as the Wasps achieved a crushing victory of 99-54 at the end of the game.
Coach Matt Fawcett was delighted with his team’s performance in their first National League game of the season. “I am so proud of my team and feel positive that we can continue performing well, with a few improvements, into the season.”
