HULL WASPS have today finalised and confirmed their pre-season home fixtures ahead of the upcoming National League season.
On Saturday 3rd September (7:30pm) the Wasps will take on last season’s promoted side, Huddersfield Heat at the Bonus Arena.
The Derby Cup, as known in the previous three-seasons is the annual club fundraiser which sees the Wasps take on another Yorkshire based team, but will now be known as the Yorkshire Shield to present a more appealing and descriptive title.
Last year, the Wasps failed to retain the trophy after Bradford Maroons won comfortably 72-49. Unfortunately the Maroons were unable to compete this year and so Huddersfield Heat have accepted the invitation.
The fixture has previously taken place at the start of the summer but will now move to the early part of the season and fit in with future pre-season campaigns for the Wasps.
“We feel that the Yorkshire Shield is a more accurate title for this exciting clash” said Hull Wasps chairman, Dave Bushnell.
“Although it proved to be popular with fans, it was never really descriptive enough to new fans who were hearing about it for the first time. The Yorkshire Shield fits in more with our local ethos as a club as it is always two Yorkshire based teams who compete.
“The same rules will apply in that if the opposition team win the game, they automatically receive an invitation to defend the trophy the following year and I’m sure the revised fixture will become even more popular with the fans.”
As Matt Fawcett’s side continue their preparations for the season, they look to travel away on Saturday 10th and 17th September (away fixtures to be confirmed) before they arrive back home on Saturday 24th (7:30pm) to take on the Doncaster Pawprint All-Stars where the Wasps won 74-72 in overtime last season.
The start of the season follows the week after with the visit of Oldham Titans on Saturday 1st October, 7:30pm at the Bonus Arena.
