It was always going to be a David vs. Goliath task only this time it was the Hull Wasps vs. the Mansfield Giants. The Giants who play in Division 2 entered the game coming off a loss the night before so there was no motivation needed for them in this one.
The first quarter was a lesson to the Wasps as Mansfield pressed the ball and made the wasps force turnovers. The Wasps trailed by double digits at the end of the first quarter. During the second quarter there were a few highlights for the wasps but the pressure from the Giants was overwhelming as the Wasps continued to make basic mistakes. When the teams broke for half time the score line was 55-21 to Mansfield.
The second half however was a different story the Wasps came out and started trading blows with the Giants who looked surprised that the plucky lower league team would not just roll over. The wasps won the 3rd quarter and showed the standard of play that they are capable of.
It was an old Wasps player Ashley Rice who starred for Mansfield hitting some big three pointers in the 4th quarter to keep a well-earned lead for the Giants the Wasps continued to play but the Giants really showed their class in this one taking the win 109-67.
Coach Fawcett said after the game. “In the first half we didn’t show up. They really took it to us. We often got good looks at the rim but it just wasn’t enough. The second half however was much more positive we traded blows with them and only lost the second half by 10. And against a division 2 team that’s very impressive for us. We have some work to do before our first game of the season but we will be ready.”
Ben Burns and Matt Wilson scored 13 and 12 for the wasps with a collection of other guys chipping in for 7.
The Wasps will be back in action this Sunday in the Humber ball tournament before preparing to face Bradford Dragons away on October 13th to tip off the league.
