Hull Wasps continued their recent good form with a convincing 87-70 win at Stockport Falcons II. It is the Wasps first away win of the season and moves them up to fourth place in VCARS.co.uk Division 4 North.
The first quarter was an evenly contested affair as both teams traded baskets, never allowing each other to build up a sizeable lead. Despite a strong start from James Rayner the quarter ended 20-20.
The Wasps came out of the second quarter in fine style, opening up a 10 point lead after a 14-4 run inspired by Matt Brutnell and John Kelsey, and continued to dominate the remainder of the quarter, to lead at half time 41-27.
Although Falcons managed to regroup and begin to score more freely, the third quarter belonged to the Wasps as they scored an impressive 23 points to extend their lead to 64-44.
The Falcons, howvever, were not willing to give up without a fight as Cole and Parr combined for 10 quick points in the first 3 minutes of the final quarter to close the gap to 12. Knowing that their first away victory of the season was within their reach, the Wasps regrouped defensively and although they were outscored 26-23 in the final quarter they were able to coast to a comfortable victory that extends their winning streak to 3 matches.
Following the game Coach Matt Fawcett said: "The team put in a great performance today. We were a little short on numbers through some injuries and other things but the 9 players we had all worked hard together and played for each other. I'm very pleased in the controlled manner in which we won. These last three wins have really boosted team morale and I am extremely proud of my team. This is proof that we can come back from disappointing losses and prove to people again that we are a quality side."
James Rayner continued his fine recent form with 20 points, supported by Matt Brutnell with 16 and John Kelsey who was once again in fine scoring form with 14 points.
Oldham Titans are the Wasps' next opponents when they visit Ennerdale Leisure Centre on Saturday 1st December (tip off 6.30pm), in a match the Wasps will be hot favourites to win as Titans are rooted to the bottom of V-Cars.co.uk Division 4 North table with 6 defeats in 6 games.
