In a weekend that threw out a number of shocks in the V-Cars.co.uk Division 4, Hull Wasps ensured they were not part of them with a comfortable and comprehensive victory over Liverpool.
Following the announcement that Oldham Titans had withdrawn from the league with immediate effect, Liverpool found themselves bottom of the table and playing for pride. Despite a good defensive effort in the first quarter from their opponents, the Wasps were able to control the tempo of the match and take a slender lead into the break 17-14.
More of the same ensued in the second quarter and although Liverpool were able to close the gap on a couple of occasions thanks to hard work inside from big David Ulph, who finished with 21 points, the Wasps were able to consistently score on their possessions and increased the lead at half time to 9 points, 41-32.
The third quarter was all Wasps as they controlled their defensive paint, restricting the dangerous Ulph to tough scoring opportunities. Captain John Kelsey was in fine form looking after the ball and picking out teammates for easy scores, Matt Brutnell benefitting from some clinical assists. By outscoring their opponents 25-15 in the quarter, the match was as good as over moving into the final 10 minutes, 66-47.
Unlike some of their performances this season, the Wasps didn't allow the momentum to slip in the final quarter and although Liverpool did their best to close the gap through the deadly three-point shooting of James Richards, who scored 21 points in the game, the Wasps were at their deadly best at the offensive end, pouring in 27 points for a final score of 93-70.
Matt Brutnell led all scorers with 28 points. Aidy Blatherwick had his best shooting performance of the season with 18 points whilst veteran Jimmy Coulson contributed 11 points.
Coach Fawcett was obviously pleased with his team's performance: "We came out strong and never looked back. We played a cool and calm game and held off numerous runs by Liverpool. Standout performance from Matt Brutnell, and an overall strong performance."
Next week's opponents Stockport Falcons pulled off the shock of the season as they defeated leaders Tees Valley Mohawks to knock them off top spot in V-Cars.co.uk division 4 and in doing so gave themselves a massive confidence boost. Tip off at Ennerdale Leisure Centre is 6.30pm on Saturday 23 February 2013.
