The Wasps got their first victory of the season against League 4 favourites, Tees Valley Mohawks II, at the Gemtec Arena tonight to go through to the next round of the National Shield. This close encounter finished 80-72 to Hull who will take great confidence from this victory to take into next weeks clash against Bradford Dragons in the National Cup.
Hull Wasps took the game to Tees Valley straight from tip-off taking as much as a 6 point lead and going in at the end of the first quarter 17-13 ahead.
Tees Valley came back strong at the start of the second going on an unanswered 10 point run with a full court press that the Wasps found hard to control. Coach Coulson switched all 5 players off in what proved very successful. The Wasps came flying back with their own 11 point unanswered run and eventually ended the half 38-35.
The third and fourth quarters remaing extremely tight with the Mohawks only pulling back 1 point by the end of the third and the fourth quarter saw the Wasps hold out to take the game at 80-72.
Centre, Jamie Goodwin, top scored with 22 points and won the game MVP. Hull Wasps now have another home tie against Durham Wildcats in the next round of the National Sheild on the weekend of October 25/26.
