The Wasps finished the 2008-09 National League season in typical dramatic fashion on Saturday evening with a narrow 69-67 win over the Wirral Hornets. In a tight encounter the whole way through, the Wasps finally came out on top with a last minute Blatherwick 3-pointer swishing the net and a last second dive to scoop the ball away from the hands of the Hornets.

In the first period both sides came out looking put a foot hold in the game but with the Wasps taking an early lead, the Hornets stepped up and went on a unanswered 8 point run before the Wasps pulled the lead back just before the end of the quarter, Hornets led 14-10.

The second produced much of the same. The Wasps managed to outscore the Hornets 20-15 to take a 1 point lead into the half time break, 30-29. It always seemed like the game was going to come down to another nail-biting finish which the club have seen so many of at the Gemtec Arena this year, and have always seemed to be the losing side on all occasions.

The third quarter saw the Hornets just edge it as they out-scored the Wasps this time 17-14 to take a 2 point setting up a thrilling final period at 46-44 to the Hornets.

Hull Wasps showed great fighting spirit in a final quarter that is perhaps what has let some performances slip during this season. With more end-to-end basketball being produced there was literally nothing between the 2 sides until the Wasps started to pull away with only 4 minutes remaining. Hull pulled 6 points in front but the Hornets never gave up and with only a minute remaining, Wirral took a 1 point lead with a 3 point shot sailing in to put plenty of hearts in mouths amongst the crowd.

With just 30 seconds left the Wasps went down court and sent the ball out to the left wing for Adrian Blatherwick to reply with a 3 point shot which seemed to hang in the air forever until it fell in to send the home crowd into histerics. The ball came back from the Hornets but some great defense from the Wasps managed to keep the ball out and with just seconds left, the Hornets had a baseline ball with a shot coming in but missing only for the rebound to see Blatherwick go for a 50:50 ball with a Hornets player and dive to knock it out of play. The final buzzer sounded and the home crowd celebrated a fantastic game to end a fantastic first season for the Hull Wasps.

Some outstanding performances from the Wasps with every player giving 100% when they came on court. Jamie Goodwin top scored with 20 points and winning the game MVP. Adrian Blatherwick scored 14 points with Ashley Rice scoring 11.
