Hull Wasps made it 2 wins from 2 on Saturday night by winning the Battle of Hull over Hull University. The Wasps won 59-31 against a spirited University team after the Tees Valley Mohawks game was cancelled due to injuries and sickness at the Teeside club.

In a close first quarter, the University side showed plenty of fight and aggression to take on the National League club, and that continued into the second period with the scores tied at 23 each.

The Wasps however finally started to take control in the second half and showed their defensive qualities and kept Hull University to just 6 points in the third period, and scoring 17 themselves to take a 40-29 lead going into the final period.

It was much of the same from then on with the Wasps continuing to outscore their opponents dramatically, with the University side's only points in the final period, coming from 2 freethrows by Wasps' very own, Chris Cummings. Cummings who also captains the University side during the season, played for them on the night rather than the Wasps.

Player-Coach James Coulson made his first playing appearance for the Wasps this year, and it could be more of the same as we approach the end of the season.

"I really enjoyed playing tonight." said Coulson. "I could continue I think certainly until the end of the season and if I work hard over the summer and keep fitness up, I may play regularly next season."

Coulson commanded a fantastic performance on the court and showed his coaching skills in a more leadership role by being on the court rather than at the side. Some good individual performances shine an even more positive light on the performance ahead of next Saturday's (21st February) National League clash with Liverpool at the Gemtec Arena (Tip-off 7pm).
