Hull Wasps lost out in yet another close game at the Gemtec this season, this time to in-form Team Durham Wildcats. The Wasps went into the game without 3 first team regulars, John Brignell, Ashley Rice and Neil Rymer, however they saw the return of Jason Munro who contributed 11 points and was second top scorer after captain Jamie Goodwin who scored 12. Angelo Irving also put 11 points to his name also.
Wasps started strong in the game and came out on top after the 1st period with a 14-12 lead. That good run continued and at the half, Hull were 30-23 to the good. However, the Wildcats didn't give up managed to gradually decrease that margin to just 2 points at 40-38 by the end of the 3rd.
Wildcats had momentum and took that into the final quarter to set up a nail-biting finish and overturn the score in a game that seemed to be in the Wasps own hands. Hull Wasps seemed to let some calls against them get to their heads and that showed with technical fouls called on Captain, Jamie Goodwin.
In the absence of Player-Coach, James Coulson, Assistant-Player-Coach, Matt Fawcett, who is currently suffering from a long term ankle injury, took charge of the game at the Gemtec.
"I think Jamie's passion showed through today. It was very frustrating for the guys out there. They felt very hard done by with some of the calls made in that final quarter and thos technicals called showed a lack of experience on our part." said Fawcett.
"We need to learn to calm ourselves when things get tough and keep a level head. That will come with experience I'm sure. We need to look to our tough game next weekend now against Stockport and work hard and learn from our mistakes. Confidence is a little low but we know what we're capable of and when we show that, that brings confidence levels up again."
The Wasps have now lost their last 4 games in the league and travel to Stockport on Saturday evening to face the play-off hopefuls.
