Hull Wasps tipped-off the new season with a bang with a 65-52 victory over Middlesbrough Lions at Eston Sports Academy. The Wasps rarely stepped out of 3rd gear, but a solid team performance brought the necessary victory which has seen the Wasps go through to the 2nd Round of the National Shield.
The Wasps got off to a tremendous start at the Eston Sports Academy in Teesside, finishing the first quarter with a 16-4 advantage. But early season rust saw the newly-formed hosts pull it back to within seven thanks to some excellent three-point shooting.
After the break, a Wasps side who, in truth, never got out of third gear, showed the experience of their extra year in the National Basketball League to keep their opponents - and their 7ft centre - at arm's length, outscoring Middlesbrough 19-11 in the third period before coasting to victory.
Forward Jamie Goodwin top-scored with 20 points and guard Adrian Blatherwick added 11, including three three-pointers.
