Hull Wasps smashed Retford Raiders in their first group game of the cup on Wednesday night. Even with just 6 players, the Raiders couldn't stop the intense scoring of the Wasps.
Hull rushed out in the first quarter to a 28-14 lead. Reserves coach and Captain Liam Wordsworth had 13 points in the first quarter with his sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Wasps stepped up the defense in the second and Retford only scored 4 points in the quarter. Some more sharp shooting and good passing saw the wasps 44-18 up at the half.
The Wasps were just too strong and first team point guard John Kelsey turned on the flair with an array of assists which found Fawcett and Birchmore on the fast break on several occasions. Retford still couldn't find their feet and the Wasps ended the third 66-29. It was Matt Fawcett's turn in the fourth and Retford couldnt stop him. The Wasps went on the win 92-37. Matt Fawcett top scored with 38 and Liam Wordsworth had 25.
Reserves coach and captain Liam Wordsworth felt the Wasps really sent a statement to the rest of the league.
"I really want to make a push for the cup this season. We have a tough group and we will need to keep up the intensity in the rest of the games I'm sure."
The Wasps next game is on the 19th November against Rotheram Hawks.
