Hull Wasps got a well earned win Wednesday night in a heated battle against the Danum Eagles. Danum came into the game with a lot of confidence after beating the Wasps earlier in the season, but the Wasps didn't hold back.
The first quarter set the tempo for the game with both teams coming out firing on all cylinders. Neil Rymer and Jamie Goodwin combined for 18 of the Wasps points in the 1st as they held a 22-21 lead at the interval. Rymer stayed hot in the 2nd but the Wasps struggled on defense and Danum created a lead of their own as they lead 39-35 at the half. This came from poor decision making by the Wasps and some impressive outside shooting by the young Eagles team.
The Wasps continued to struggle on defense and could't chip away at danum's lead. After a timeout midway through the 3rd the Wasps turned up the heat and went on a 13-0 run behind 12 3rd quarter points from John Kelsey to take a 59-51 lead going into the fourth and final period. The fourth quarter promised to be exciting and didn't disapoint. Both teams battled hard and Danum slowly chipped away at the Wasps lead. Danum pulled it back to within 3 when Jamie Goodwin was fouled on his way to the basket. The events afterwards saw the Wasps Jamie Goodwin and Danums Arron Price Ejected from the game. This proved to be a turning point in the game as Price had 10 points already in the fourth. The Wasps kept hold of their lead in the dying minutes and the game seemed over after clutch free throws from Rymer and Kelsey.
Reserves coach and captain Liam Wordsworth felt it was a well desrved win for the Wasps. "Everyone worked hard the whole game and really had a hunger to win. Several players went on scoring runs in the game which showed our ability to take over a game."
Neil Rymer top scored with 27 points followed by John Kelsey with 20 and Jamie Goodwin with 17
