Hull Wasps booked their place in the final of the Doncaster league cup Wednesday night as they edged out Darfield in the final seconds.
Both teams were at full strength and the game promised to be a close encounter. Both teams struggled offensivley in the first quarter, but the Wasps defense was looking good at gave them a 12-11 lead going into the second. The Wasps came back out firing on all cylinders at took control of the game. The Wasps lead by as much as 15 half way through the second. Darfield gained composure and went on a six point run. This gave the Wasps a 32-23 lead at the half.
The Third quarter was Darfield's turn to show their offensive skills and clawed their way back into the game. The Wasps kept on battling and held a 3 point lead going into the fourth and final quarter. Both teams came out in top form and traded baskets throughout the final period. With 20 seconds left Hull held a three point lead until Darfield burried a corner three to square it up. at this point John Kelsey showed his leadership skills to keep the Wasps settled in the final second. A deflection gave the wasps a baseline inbound with 3 seconds left. Kelsey again showing his leadership skills found Rob Birchmore of screen for a game winning and 1 lay-up. Rob completed the play by knocking down the free throw and booking the Wasps place in the cup final.
Reserves coach and captain Liam Wordsworth believes the Wasps can go all the way and have somthing to show for what has been a very successful season for the reserves. " Everyone played great tonight and i ahve no doubt in my mind that we can go all the way."
Neil Rymer top scored for the Wasps with 35 points.
Scunthorpe steelers beat favourites Doncaster Falcons 75-70 in the other semi final and will meet the Hull Wasps in the final on April 1st.
