HULL Wasps player-coach John is determined to make a winning start to his side’s National Basketball League division four campaign.
Hull head to Liverpool on Saturday in the hope of building on a dominant 118-72 victory against division rivals Tees Valley Mohawks in the National Shield two weeks ago.
And 6ft 8in centre Brignell wants his side to roar from the blocks.
The 29-year-old said: “We want to make a strong start to the season.
“It was great to win so convincingly in the Shield as we want to win every game we play, but we know success in the league is the only way to take this club to the level is deserves.
“We have worked hard on our offence and defence in the two weeks since our last game and will be that little bit better prepared. Players are working very hard in training and making it difficult for me to choose a starting five. That’s exactly the problem I want them to give me.”
The Wasps beat Liverpool by 22 and 19 at home and away respectively last season. The Merseyside outfit finished rock bottom of division four north.
But with the ever-changing face of the league, Hull will take nothing for granted before crossing the Pennines, according to Wasps captain Jamie Goodwin.
The 6ft 5in forward, who is also the club’s assistant coach, said: “There are lots of new teams in this season. And the existing ones will have all reloaded their squads with new players.
“Even last season, Liverpool had some very experienced players that could punish teams from long distance if they are not defended closely.
“But we won’t judge a team before we have seen them play, so we will prepare for Liverpool the same way as we will prepare for last year’s champions Huddersfield.
“John is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to our preparation. He has worked very hard to make sure the players know exactly what is expected of them on both ends of the court.
“And the players have responded even better than we could have hoped for. There is a really competitive atmosphere at training. Everybody is working very hard to earn their spots in the team. There is a real buzz about the place."
Team: John Brignell (Coach), Jamie Goodwin (Captain), Matt Fawcett, Aidy Blatherwick, Rob Birchmore, Ash Rice, James Rayner, Miles Anderson, John Kelsey, Andy Marr.
The Wasps’ next home game is at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 23, against Middlesbrough Lions at the Bonus Arena in Walton Street, west Hull.
Tickets for the game cost £4 for adults and £3 for children.
