Hull Wasps fan favourite John Kelsey has been named as the first team’s new captain for the new 2012-13 National League season.

Kelsey, who won a triple MVP award in 2011, including the fans’ player vote, will step into the role to lead the team on court throughout the new campaign.

“I’m delighted to be the new captain of the Hull Wasps” said the point guard.

“This is a great club and I loved coming back into the new squad last season. We’ve been working really hard as a team all summer long and really can’t wait to get started.

“I think the fans know that I will always give 100% for this team and the players around me and I can’t wait to get the yellow jersey on again.”

Head-coach Matt Fawcett was keen to establish an experienced captain again for the first team following John Brignell from last season. Brignell won’t continue in the Wasps’ playing roster this year due to work and family commitments so Fawcett has decided to choose Kelsey as his new captain.

Fawcett said: “John [Kelsey] is a fantastic player with a great deal of experience. He signifies the team spirit I want to establish in the side, which is one of hard work and determination.

“We’re sad to say goodbye to John Brignell. He’s been an immense player for this club. I will always have great memories of him playing here and role he played in leading our team. We always knew after last season, that it would be difficult for him to continue. His drive and passion for the game is second to none and we all regret to say goodbye. “

Meanwhile, Fawcett has also appointed two new assistant coaches to help with the development of his new side.

Former Wasps head-coach and player James Coulson makes a return to assist, while 23-year-old Phil Pocknee, previously part of the University of Hull Basketball team, also joins as an assistant.
