This weekend witnesses an important game for the Hull Wasps as they play against the Mersey Tigers in Liverpool for what will be the Tigers’ first EBL4 home game of the season.

The Wasps have suffered an unfortunate string of injuries in the last couple of weeks, resulting in the absences of Matt Wilson, new signings Lee Brown and Jack Daley, and Captain John Kelsey from the court. However, the return of key players and continued high performances in previous games will ensure that the Wasps make the trip to Liverpool in high spirits this Saturday.

Last weekend saw the Wasps kick-start their season with a well-deserved victory against Childwall Academy, a standard the Wasps hope to maintain and improve upon in the upcoming months. The following day they faced off against last year’s National Shield winners and Division 3 League Champions Huddersfield Heat. The Wasps gave their all, with new players Matt Macart, John Stewart and Manuel Guzman putting in great effort, before losing by only a small margin of 92-79.  Despite a loss, Coach Fawcett came away from the game feeling pleased with his team, boosted by their strong performance against a Division 2 side.

The Mersey Tigers have enjoyed a successful beginning to their season, with a massive 100-22 point win against Sefton Stars. The Wasps will have to be on top form on Saturday as, despite some shaky performances from this club in previous seasons, the Tigers are a talented side who have managed to assemble a formidable team over the summer. New signings for Mersey include 6’ 7” Chris Carroll who has previously played for Loughborough University; 6’ 5” Joe Irving, a former Huddersfield Heat player, 6’ 6” David Ulph and Tadas Merkelis, who proved himself top scorer against Sefton Stars, racking up 22 points for his team.

Looking to bounce back to winning ways, the Wasps are aware that tougher opposition will pose challenges, but Coach Fawcett is feeling positive about his team’s chances. “We have a fantastic team this season and we have been learning from each game and working on areas that we know we need to improve. This is a big game for us and we hope to rise to the challenge and walk away with a win. I have every confidence in my team.”

Tip off is 2.30pm on Saturday 5th October at Archbishop Beck Tennis Centre, Liverpool.
