Debuting Stewart is an instant hit for the Wasps
The Hull Wasps ended their pre-season on a high on Saturday night with a comfortable win against the Lincoln Stars, a victory which leaves the team feeling positive about the upcoming season. A strong and supportive crowd turned up to support the new Wasps team in action, and they were not disappointed.
The game got off to a rapid start, with Wasps’ new signing John Stewart making his presence known within the first twenty seconds, scoring the opening basket of the game. The opposition were not far behind, however, with Wilkins of the Lincoln Stars responding quickly with a basket of his own, also within the first minute. Undeterred, the Wasps made a strong start to the match, going on to widen the gap with John Stewart and James Rayner scoring quickly and efficiently.
New signing Matt Macart scored his debut basket at Ennerdale in the fourth minute, followed by two free throws and another 2-pointer. He was aided by fellow team mates John Kelsey and John Stewart for 22-11 by end of 9th minute. Despite steady scoring from the Lincoln Stars, the Wasps remained dominant, gaining an impressive lead at 27-12 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Lincoln Stars begin to close the gap, a number of free throws scored by Coach Rice and Parker bringing the score to 19-29. However, the Wasps soon found their footing again, scoring a quick string of baskets. John Stewart and Matt Wilson remained on top form with James Brough scoring a 3-pointer, bringing the half-time score to 24-44.
Despite an admirable 3-point shot from Wilkins, the Stars struggled heavily in the third quarter, scoring only 5 points in the entire ten minutes with the Wasps easily cutting through the Stars’ defences. The quarter began with three of the Wasps’ new signings, Lee Brown, Matt MacArt and John Stewart, dominating the court. Original Wasps players also proved their talents with impressive 3-pointers from assistant Coach Jimmy Coulson and Coach Matt Fawcett, with Matt Wilson and James Rayner also scoring. Score 29-70.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lincoln Stars, with significant contributions from Coach Rice, Parker, Merkelis and Chapman. However, it proved to be too little too late as the clock was ticking down to the end of the last quarter with a clear victory in sight for the Wasps. Final score 86-49.
New signing John Stewart proved himself as MVP with a brilliant 29 points scored overall.
