The new National League 2012-13 fixtures have now been released. Hull Wasps begin the new season with a testing away trip to Division 2 Mansfield Giants in the National Cup on September 23rd before beginning their quest for League 4 play-offs at Bradford Dragons II on October 13th.
The Wasps will then come back for the first home game of the season, tipping-off against Bradford Maroons at the new home of Ennerdale Leisure Centre.
Following confirmation some weeks ago that Hull Wasps will leave the Bonus Arena, Wasps Chairman, Dave Bushnell, has announced that Ennerdale is set to become the new home for Hull’s National League basketball club.
“We can finally confirm that Ennerdale Leisure Centre will be our new home.”
“It’s been hard work and I want to say sorry to our fans for the long wait. Unfortunately it’s not something that we could do quickly. A few months back when we knew that Bonus Arena was no longer an option, we had to investigate thoroughly before making the decision about the move.
“We looked at a number of possible venues, but Ennerdale clearly stood out as the front runner. It has a good capacity of 500 seats, along with all the other facilities that we needed to support the running of our home games. It also means we can tip-off an hour earlier than usual which will no doubt help the families that come to watch us.“
Bushnell also confirmed that Hull City Council had pulled out all the stops to get the facility in good shape in order to bring basketball to the centre, including the provision of new court remarking to the 2012 regulations.
He continued: “We had discussions with Hull City Council who were happy to work with us and we, them. They have been fantastic and very supportive and I can’t thank them enough for their help. There is still work going on to prepare for our first home game, but we’re very much looking forward to our new beginning at Ennerdale Leisure Centre.”
Councillor Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said “we are delighted to welcome the Hull Wasps to Ennerdale Leisure Centre. We are having a fantastic year of sports and cultural activities as part of the Hull Gold 2012 Olympic year, and the Hull Wasps choosing to make their home at Ennerdale Leisure Centre provides us with lots of opportunities to work together and build participation in sport as part of the Olympic legacy”.
The Wasps first confirmed home game of the 2012-13 season is set for Saturday 20th October (6:30pm) followed by a second-round Shield clash against Sefton Stars on Sunday 21st October (3pm).
