Hull Wasps make a return to the league season tomorrow with an away trip to Oldham Titans. Wasps finished for the Christmas break with an impressive 89-40 win over Bradford Maroons and will look to start the New Year with a bang.
Just two points off a play-off spot, a win tonight at Oldham could see Hull rise to third in National League 4 North and keep pressure on their rivals.
The Wasps began this season’s league campaign against Oldham at the Bonus Arena and dispatched of the Lancashire side in style with an 84-39 victory. Oldham have since lost almost every game this season and sit second from bottom, while the Wasps, after a good run of results in November and December, sit firmly in fourth.
Wasps will be favourites going into the game tomorrow but it’s not a game that player-coach Matt Fawcett is taking for granted.
“Oldham will be a tricky game for the team” said Fawcett.
“They haven’t had the results go their way so far. They came to us on the first game and we played well and turned them over. That wouldn’t have done any good for their confidence, regardless of their ability as a team. They’re probably much better than their results suggest and they played a good game against Rossendale just before Christmas.
“We have to work as hard as we did against Bradford Maroons. That was the best we have played together so far and it shows how we can compete in this league. We can’t let that drop now though. This is our first game back after the break and the players may find it hard to get back to their full fitness right away. We have a deep squad though and I’m confident going into the second half of the season.”
The Wasps have some minor injuries to contend with for the game tomorrow night and will be without point guard John Kelsey and forwards James Rayner, Jason Munro and Liam Lacey.
Tip-off at Oldham Sport Centre is 8pm.
