HULL Wasps are delighted to announce John Brignell as the club's new player-coach.

The 6ft 8in centre returned to the club as player-assistant coach in the summer after playing for the Wasps two seasons ago.

Brignell replaces Chris McKenna, who recently stepped down along with assistant James Coulson.

Brignell, 29, starred for the promotion-winning Hull Icebergs in the National League. He spent a season playing high school basketball in Canada and was taught by some of North America's best coaches, including Boston Celtics legend Red Auerbach at the club's summer camps.

Brignell said: "I am delighted to be given the head coaching role. I think a top-four finish is well within our grasp if we play to our potential this season.

"This team has a lot of talent and I will do all I can to get the best out of them."

Captain Jamie Goodwin has been made assistant coach.
